    The Southern California News Group (SCNG) is seeking an experienced journalist to join its opinion team, focusing specifically on Southern California’s Inland Empire, where we publish four newspapers - the Press-Enterprise, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, The Sun and the Redlands Daily Facts. Our Inland Empire opinion writer will be responsible for determining our stance on local issues in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and will also be a part of our Southern California editorial board and will weigh in on state and national issues.  This position will be based in Riverside or Rancho Cucamonga and will report to SCNG’s opinion editor.#SCNG #Mid-Senior level


    SCNG’s Inland Empire opinion writer will be our lead editorial board member for Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Duties will include developing and leading a local editorial board comprised of community stakeholders and members of the public, determining the editorial position on local issues and writing persuasive editorials that influence public opinion and effect change for the better. Duties also include meeting with community leaders and representing the newspapers at community events, occasional public speaking and/or appearances on panels and in other media.


    A good candidate for this position is ambitious and creative and eager to engage the community in person and online. We are particularly focused on increasing engagement on digital platforms, and opinion should play a key role in our audience development strategies. We are also seeking someone who understands the importance of journalism to democracy and who is enthusiastic about facilitating and participating in the public discourse.


    • Three or more years of experience in professional news management roles.
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism or related field.
    • Strong writing skills, especially persuasive writing.
    • Excellent editing ability, including knowledge of AP style.
    • Thorough knowledge of current events, politics.
    • Strong understanding of social media and knowledge of how to use it.
    • Basic knowledge of analytics and how to use them in digital decision making.
