    Overview

    The Southern California News Group and Bay Area News Group (part of Media News Group) are teaming up to take our digital subscription initiatives to the next level and we need your help.  We are looking for a product manager for email and newsletters to help us take advantage of our opportunities with this medium. We need someone who has a passion for newsletters, understands their role for journalists, and is motivated to use them to improve our digital subscription business.  

     

    Our group of news publications includes some of the premier local news websites in California such as the San Jose Mercury News, Orange County Register and LA Daily News. This position is based in Southern California. #SCNG #Associate

    Responsibilities

    This individual will work on a California-wide digital subscription team and with newsroom managers to craft an email strategy to drive site traffic, user loyalty, subscription and retention. They should have a working knowledge of digital marketing, audience development, analytics, social media and, especially, email newsletters for news organizations.

     

    His/Her primary responsibility is to be our in-house expert on everything email from big idea strategies to technical minutiae. They also must be comfortable working with external third-party organizations and across different departments in the organization.

    Who you’ll work with:

    You’ll work directly with a motivated team of individuals hyper-focused on growing digital subscriptions including a director of digital subscriptions, acquisition managers in northern and southern California, retention managers, and a product strategist.  You will also collaborate with editors and reporters across our properties to brainstorm, launch and nurture newsletters to support our local news mission.

     

    Core functions:

    • Build general editorial newsletter strategy and work with local news properties to help manage their newsletters
    • Work closely with our newsroom leaders and individual journalists to guide them on how best to make newsletters engaging and which new ones to try
    • Align email messaging and infrastructure across various departments
    • Manage list hygiene, segments, drip campaigns and email templates
    • Track and measure effectiveness of campaigns
    • Conduct research to better understand target audiences and leverage intelligence gathering to construct effective messaging
    • Grow subscribers to newsletters
    • Develop strategies to leverage newsletters for subscriber acquisition and retention

    Qualifications

    Skills Desired:

    • Ability to manage multiple projects on deadlines
    • Experience working with email platforms and managing emails lists
    • Ability to manage multiple projects on deadlines
    • Clear communicator who can share findings, recommendations and strategy within the organization
    • Comfortable working in a newsroom as well as marketing
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Basic analytic skills
    • Motivation to take ownership over projects and outcomes
    • A team player who doesn’t mind working independently or as part of a group

     

    Experience

    • 1-5 years working in digital marketing, digital subscriptions or email product management/newsletters
    • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, marketing or related field
    • Experience working for a media or news organization preferred
