Southwest News Media, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is seeking an Assistant Editor to join the team!  MediaNews Group offers news reporting and third party advertising and marketing opportunities through its multi-platform products which include: web, mobile, tablet, and print.  We are one of the largest media groups in the U.S., serving high-value audiences and connecting advertisers to them. Southwest News Media, a subsidiary of MediaNews Group, is looking for an experienced journalist to work in collaboration with its news team in covering the communities we serve.


We publish six weekly newspapers and related website in a high-growth and changing area.


Our focus is on producing hyper-local content that entices local residents to turn to us as the primary sources for local news and information.


  • Manage content including stories and photos at direction of a supervising editor to make them ready for digital and print platforms.
  • Produce briefs, letters to the editor and short stories at the direction of a supervising editor from a variety of sources including press releases, social media posts, etc.
  • Maintain communication with a supervising editor and the production hub, when necessary, and uses Google content budget documents to keep everyone informed about plans and progress.
  • Understands and uses only company-provided hardware, software and cloud-based equipment and systems for company business and tasks.
  • Meets production deadlines.
  • Contributes to a positive culture of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Input content not sent electronically.
  • Assist the public with finding information about archival content.
  • Perform light copy-editing and proofreading as requested by editors.
  • Provide administrative support to editors.
  • Other duties as assigned.


This position will also require some shared customer service and clerical duties.


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Motivated self-starter who is passionate about producing great community content and enterprise reporting.
  • Editing experience and ability to write clean copy for both print and digital in a fast-paced, deadline-drive environment.
  • Work in collaboration with other team members in developing weekly story budgets and creation of multi-media packages.
  • Be intensely familiar with the communities assigned to oversee, and have trusted connections with local stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of content management system
  • Must possess a sense of urgency in being first in providing accurate content that impacts our local communities
  • Demonstrated fluency and success in using social media to drive audience engagement
  • Participate in developing content related to special "advertorial" publications/projects
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends and some holidays
  • Candidate must have a valid driver's license with a driving record that is insurable by the company
  • Excellent writing and grammar skills.
  • Knowledge of AP style.
  • Good news judgment.
  • Publishing knowledge is helpful.
  • Ability to multi-task in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to meet multiple daily deadlines.
  • Comfortable learning new software.
  • Research skills of current events.
  • Ability to monitor and use social media for news.
