MediaNews Group is seeking a Senior Accountant to join our Shared Services team!  MediaNews Group offers news reporting and third party advertising and marketing opportunities through its multi-platform products which include: web, mobile, tablet, and print.  We are one of the largest media groups in the U.S., serving high-value audiences and connecting advertisers to them. MNG publishes award-winning content (49 Pulitzers) that amasses and engages a nationwide audience via 800 multi-media platforms including web, mobile, social, and print.  We are transforming the news industry.


Our Shared Services department, located in Willoughby, Ohio aids all print and digital mediums coast to coast for MediaNews Group, which is the 3rd largest Media Company in the nation. Shared Services consists of 100 people across 5 financial functions – which includes Billing, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Cash Application, and Accounting.  Through Shared Services, you can not only get your foot in the door into a dynamic financial department but also continue your career whether it’s to grow within the team or move laterally throughout. Our Shared Services team is rapidly growing and we are looking for candidates who are skilled in multitasking, proficient in computer skills, and who are reliable and have a sense of urgency.


The Sr General Ledger (GL) Accountant is responsible for all JDE activities related to recording journal entries for the assigned Properties (Newspapers), including monthly account reconciliation of assigned accounts. This position is responsible for tracking newsprint inventory, calculating expenses, and approving payments. This position is a key communication link with assigned Properties FP&A contacts.


  • Prepare monthly journal entries and supporting schedules for assigned properties and ensure proper approvals have been received.
  • Prepare documentation for journal entries in the following areas: ad revenue, interactive revenue, circulation revenue, circulation expenses, advertising expenses, newsprint expenses, commission expenses, bonus expenses, and allocations.
  • Release P&L detail to department heads at field locations.
  • Field questions/inquiries from department heads, FP&A contacts, and Publishers regarding financial results and perform research activities.
  • Complete balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Assist FP&A resources with variance analyses and Day 7 reports.
  • Perform newsprint analyst tasks; tracking inventory orders, receipt, and invoicing.
  • Complete inventory roll-forward to calculate newsprint expenses and generate related journal entries.
  • Perform bad debt analysis and book bad debt expense.
  • Generate BPC reports as requested.
  • Provide customer service to key contacts at field locations.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Math or related field of study. Master's degree and CPA or working toward certification preferred.
  • Five (5) years of related Accounting and business experience required.
  • Experience with cash flow reporting, capital spending, forecasting preferred.
  • Experience with Excel, using formulas, pivot tables, etc.
  • Ability to constantly analyze, prioritize workload, and problem-solve with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure, dynamic environment, with tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and interrelation skills with an ability to establish, build and maintain relationships with a variety of people across divisions.
  • Organized and detail-oriented with excellent prioritizing and time management skills.
  • Identify potential issues and notify senior management, while using tact and diplomacy in servicing the client.
  • Strong knowledge and application of GAAP.
  • Experience with journal entries, account reconciliation, and financial close.


Required Applications / Platform Knowledge / Softwares etc

  • Demonstrated proficiency with PC tools such as electronic mail software, word processor, presentation software, and spreadsheet software (MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of automated accounting systems (JDEdwards and/or Oracle system preferred)
  • SAP BPC (BI tool preferred)

Work Environment


This job is for a normal office work environment with continuous use of a computer/keyboard. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and read written and PC monitor information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds.
