  • Develop and maintain sources within Loveland and Larimer County’s law enforcement and public safety communities, including police, sheriff, fire, search and rescue, and emergency medical agencies.
  • Listen to the police scanner during work hours in order to respond to breaking news, and report on breaking news as it happens, on all digital platforms, and provide photography of breaking news as necessary.
  • Produce a daily log of arrests and police actions from area law enforcement agencies and provide expanded reporting on those actions that deserve separate headlines and stories.
  • Watch emails and social media for releases of information from area law enforcement agencies, quickly turning around stories for posting and providing expanded reporting, when necessary, for online and print editions. 
  • Produce daily news articles and briefs, while planning and writing weekend news features from the public safety beat. 
  • Maintain a record of cases in which we have named criminal suspects, and follow those court cases through their conclusion.
  • Work at least one early morning shift per week, watching for updates and any breaking news and keeping our website updated.
  • Rotate with other reporters on weekend and holiday shifts, and complete other shared newsroom duties as directed by the managing editor.
  • Be the newsroom’s lead reporter for wildfire coverage.


  • Bachelor’s or Associate's degree (with comparable experience) in journalism or related field.
  • Experience in reporting breaking news, politics, features, or enterprise is preferred.
  • Experience in both photography and video, and a willingness to experiment with new storytelling tools and social media approaches.
  • Strong writing across a variety of story types.
  • A mindset to put the reader first.
  • Some experience in copy editing a bonus.
  • Curiosity is a must.


Work Environment

This position may be permanent remote, however the Reporter must live in the area.
