Cover city government for 3-4 local communities, focusing on watchdog topics -- how cities are spending public money, assuring that leaders are operating with appropriate transparency and monitoring to assess how government actions are really impacting local residents.
Develop strong sources in the communities and interact with local residents to learn what types of coverage matters to them.
Post to our products, as well as social media.
Along with producing stories that are assigned, the reporter should also be able to pitch story ideas on a regular basis.
Mine data sources to find unexplored avenues for reporting.
The candidate must be able to research and develop stories that are accurate, compelling, useful -- and truly connect with readers.
Bachelor’s degree (or comparable experience) in journalism or related field.
Experience in reporting breaking news, politics, features, or enterprise is preferred.
Experience in journalistic social media preferred.
Ability to speak languages in addition to English not required, but would be a benefit in our diverse community. Mandarin, Spanish or Vietnamese would be particularly helpful.
A mindset to put the reader first.
Intellectual curiosity is a must.
This position may be permanent remote, however, the Reporter must live in the area.
